Charles R. Riggs collection of Civil War papers and artifacts, 1861-1908, bulk 1861-1865.

This collection consists of papers and artifacts related to Charles Riggs's Civil War military service. The papers include personal letters to his mother and brother, 2nd Iowa Cavalry records, 61st Colored Infantry orders and records, 2nd West Tennessee Infantry records, letters and records (1868, 1890, 1908) concerning his pension, Riggs's resignation and honorable discharge papers from the 61st Colored Infantry and a handwritten list of battles in which Riggs was involved. The artifacts in the collection include a roster of Company K of the 61st Colored Infantry, a surgical kit, a sash from a dress uniform and an album of pictures of fellow officers in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry and others.

Charles Riggs was born in Lyons, NY in 1835. In 1837 his family moved to Iowa, settling near Delmar in Clinton County. In 1861 he enlisted with Iowa's Second Cavalry and was elected orderly sergeant of Company L. In 1863 he was promoted to captain of Company K of the Second West Tennessee Infantry (African Descent).
